Waterloo's Research In Motion is slated to lay off a minimum of 2,000 employees in the coming weeks as part of a major global restructuring, according to several people close to the company. RIM has roughly 16,500 employees worldwide.
If true—and it seems that it cannot be false judging by the quantity of inside sources—this will be RIM's second significant downsizing in the past year.

The Canadan Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission continues its search for a "sustainable solution" to the telecommunications needs of Canadians with hearing and speech disabilities.
"Text relay services available nationwide meet the needs of the vast majority of people with such disabilities," the CRTC says. "However, people with disabilities who use a sign language as their first or primary language have submitted that video relay, a sign-language service, would better meet their needs." So the CRTC has decided that further study is required to better understand the different projections regarding use and cost of the service.

This week, Yahoo launched Axis, its own web browser. Considering Yahoo's eroding reputation, and the fact that many sleek and popular web browsers like Chrome and Firefox are already well established, it will be a steep uphill climb for Axis.
But Axis may not be alone in attempting to enter this fragmented, oversaturated space: Facebook is now rumoured to be in talks with Opera over a potential acquisition that would see the social network repolish the web browser into its own - not unlike how it bought Instagram, then launched a mobile app called Facebook Camera.
