ComScore's Top Start-ups in Canada

Everytime we publish our monthly Techvibes Start-Up Indexes, there are always a few complaints about the use of Alexa and Compete data for ranking the websites of start-ups. While we agree that it's not an accurate measurement of website traffic, it is a great way to compare the traffic of different online properties as it creates a level playing field for metrics. Our inaugural Canadian Start-Up Index on July 1st received the usual anti-Alexa comments, so we decided to consult with a recognized Internet information provider - comScore - to see how the top websites on our Canadian Index measure up. In the attached chart, the Online % Reach is the percentage of Canadians online that each entity reaches. As an example, Metrolyrics.com reached 7.7% of all Canadians aged 2+ online during the month of May 2008, making them the hands-down leader. Nexopia, which ranks #12 on our Canadian Start-up Index, leapfrogs everyone and grabs the #2 spot on the comScore list with a reach of 5.6%. That's a lot of teenagers. Canada Start-up Index - July 2008

Canada Start-up Index The Start-up Indexes are a monthly ranking of start-ups based on an average of Alexa and Compete rankings. Originally inspired by Marcelo Calbucci's Seattle Startup Index, I've been producing Techvibes' Start-up Indexes for half a year now. First started as an offhand post idea, the Indexes were well received, appealing to every geek's inner motivation to appear on high score lists. Starting with just two, Vancouver and Toronto, we responded to demand and suggestions and last month posting Indexes for nine cities/regions. A Canada-wide index had been requested a number of times, so coinciding with today, the one hundred and forty-first anniversary of confederation of the Dominion of Canada, I'm pleased to post our first Canada Start-up Index. The criteria for companies to appear on the list:

Located in Canada
Less than five years old
Not a public company
Is a tech company; either hardware, software, web app/service, or mobile

The Index is intended as a jovial comparison of Canadian companies. Comprehensive traffic data is difficult to obtain, and neither Alexa or Compete’s numbers are perfect; we average them to smooth out bias. Further, web traffic isn't necessarily a relevant measure of success, nor is it even an indication of having a practical business model. I'm sure many Seattle web companies experience feelings of inadequacy in ranking below the Seattle Index's #3 site, I Can Haz Cheezburger. If you know of a company that would qualify for the list, please post a comment and we'll see to including it in the next edition (and relevant local editions). Kitchener-Waterloo Start-up Index - May 2008

Welcome to the first edition of the Techvibes Kitchener-Waterloo Start-up Index. The index ranks Kitchener-Waterloo area tech start-ups based on an average of Alexa and Compete traffic rankings. Previously, some of these companies were grouped in the Toronto index, but we decided that Kitchener-Waterloo is distant and active enough to warrant its own list. b5media Not Merging with Technorati

Techcrunch's Erick Schonfeld reported yesterday that merger talks between Technorati and Toronto's b5media have blown-up. According to his post (and a leaked Technorati PowerPoint slide), Technorati has been going down a new strategic path that included raising an additional round of financing and pitching VCs that it could turn itself into a blog advertising network and/or even pursue a blog roll-up strategy.

The talks with Toronto-based b5media (they’re big in Canada) indicate that it is taking the blog roll-up idea more seriously than we previously thought. If the merger with b5media had gone through, Technorati would have gained a network of 340 blogs. One of the slides in the pitch deck Technorati was showing potential investors (shown above) outlines how a roll-up strategy could be combined with an ad network. Technorati would use its search engine to promote owned-and-operated blogs. It would sell ads using its own sales force instead of third-party ad networks for an “immediate 30-50% revenue bump” and sell across its network.

b5media was #1 on our Toronto Start-Up Index for April which came out yesterday and CEO Jeremy Wright has been active in the comment thread. I'd love to get his comment on this piece of news.

FreshBooks gets Tough on Costs

Mike McDerment of FreshBooks has promised to blog about the pending economic downturn and what it could mean to the kinds of professionals that FreshBooks serves. Looks like the LA Times beat him to it and gave FreshBooks an solid endorsement in an article titled When the Going gets Tough, Get Tough on Costs

.

Use technology efficiently Consider online accounting software, videoconferencing and online processes for more efficient operations. Entertainment lawyer Lindsay Spiller, who splits his time between his San Francisco office and Los Angeles, uses an online invoicing and time-tracking service to cut costs at his 4-year-old firm while maintaining a professional image. The Web-based service from FreshBooks in Toronto gives small-business owners and freelancers a relatively inexpensive and easy way to bill clients from anywhere, he said. “With the click of a button I can send an invoice to my client, and they receive a very nice-looking, professional-looking invoice that makes it also easy for them to pay,” Lindsay said.

Great coverage for a Toronto-based start-up and great advice for anyone concerned about how their business is going to make it through some stormy weather. Coverage like this could be what it takes to vault FreshBooks ahead of iBegin, b5media, and ProductWiki on the Toronto Start-Up Index for April.
