Rogers Communications and the Canary Derby

Techvibes is a media sponsor of the Vancouver Canary Derby on June 27th.

This is the third installment in our series about local high-technology companies and their involvement in the second annual Vancouver Canary Derby. Let’s continue…

Rogers Communications is a diversified Canadian communications and media company, with about 2,500 employees in BC, 29,000 nationwide. Rogers is engaged in wireless voice and data communications services through Wireless, Canada's largest wireless provider and the operator of the country's only national GSM/HSPA based network. The Rogers Rockets, their derby team, is from Rogers Wireless.

Team Captain Steven Yip, Retail Account Representative with Rogers Wireless, tells us that Rogers is known for its speed, “We have Canada's fastest and most reliable wireless network - it's three times faster than the others and over the past five years have invested $371.7 million in our network in British Columbia. We also have a product called the Rogers Rocket Stick that allows people a way to take high speed internet anywhere where Rogers provides HSPA coverage. This inspired the name of our team and the look of our cart. “

The Rogers Rockets are participating in the Canary Derby this year because, “It's a way to come together as a team for a great cause. To have fun and oh yeah, to beat the pants off the competition by showing them that we are more than just a pretty face and a fast network.”

When asked about their go-kart, Team Captain Steven explains that “We are being built for speed AND design. Rogers is all about partnerships and bringing in the experts. Our cart is being worked on by Blitzkrieg Autowerks in Vancouver. They are prepping the soapbox to ensure it is safe and built for speed. The cart will then be designed to resemble our portable internet Rocket Stick - one of our popular devices that allow our road warrior customers to stay connected on the go.”

$5,000 is their fundraising target and the Rogers Rockets will reach it through sponsorship from a few key partners (Nokia, RIM, and in-kind services provided by Blitzkrieg Autowerks) along with ice cream sales, 50/50 draws, and raffles (prizes include use of their GM and VP's parking spaces, swag, phones, and other excellent give-aways).

When Mr. Yip was asked if the Rogers Rockets had any challenges for their competitors, he enthusiastically replied, “Did I mention we are Canada's fastest wireless network and that our name is the Rogers Rockets? Seriously, our challenge is to raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation to support ground breaking early cancer detection research.”

Good luck on June 27th Steven – this insider hears that the competition in the speed category is fierce this year.

Aquatic Informatics and the Canary Derby

Techvibes is a media sponsor of the Vancouver Canary Derby on June 27th.

No, this isn’t all about fish tanks and bird cages – it’s about a high-technology company and its involvement with the second annual Vancouver Canary Derby. Let me explain…

Aquatic Informatics, around since 1998 and currently based in Gastown, builds software solutions that help water agencies turn large data sets into useful information. Their main product, AQUARIUS, makes large water and environmental data sets easier to visualize, correct, analyze and report. For example, Water Survey Canada and the United States Geological Survey use AQUARIUS to determine how much water is flowing in rivers and streams across the country, what the water quality characteristics of that water are and what important trends are evident for the future.

“We believe in community involvement and believe that the Canary Foundation does great work focused on the prevention and early detection of cancer, which is so important to fighting this disease long-term” espouses Dave Ferguson, VP of Business Development for Aquatic Informatics. Not only is community involvement a high priority in the Aquatic Informatics culture, but so is the creative intensity that is being poured into their highly engineered go-kart, “We are in the Derby to win the speed category. We have built the cart to match the weight restrictions precisely so who drives the cart will depend on how much each person has eaten the day before the race. The number of hours invested in the engineering and design of the AI cart is a closely guarded corporate secret and could only be shared under strict NDA.” With that being said, the derby team is working hard at raising funds using a very clever method that would be near and dear to many a high-tech firm, “Although we will go the usual friends and family route, we expect to raise the most money by charging $1 per shot for each espresso served by the coffee machine in our office.”

When Mr. Ferguson was asked if he had any challenges for the other participating derby teams he only had one thing to say…”Be afraid. Be very afraid.”

Dave, we are.
